Overview

The crop tool in GIMP 2.2 does not allow you to specify an aspect ratio, this method overcomes that limitation.

Prerequisites

None

Steps

  1. Select the "Rectangle Selection" tool(1).
  2. Change it to "Fixed aspect ratio" and enter the aspect ratio you require.(2)

  3. Select the area you require. If you don't get it quite in the right postion you can hold down the Alt key and use the arrow keys to move the selection area without effecting the image underneath. In the following screenshot I have activated the quickmask to show where I have selected

Tips

  1. You don't have to use a fixed ratio to use this method, you can use "Free selection" as well.
